Hi,
For this condition, exercise is good but low impact such as swimming or cycling. This will help maintain your mobility. A physio will be able to advise on exercises to build core muscle strength to support your back. You may be helped by paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly.
Epidural steroid injections are a recognised part of treatment and will reduce pain and inflammation in the nerves so I suggest you reconsider your decision regarding the epidural.
Surgery is unlikely to be needed as this is grade 1 which means it is mild.
