Whats the most effective cure for radiating pain in the thigh and knee due to grade 1 degen. anterolisthesis at L4-5?
An MRI revealed grade 1 degen. anterolisthesis at L4-5.I have radiating pain down right thigh and knee..I weigh only 120 and I execise, but not now. Was rec'd. to get an epidural but dont want it.Then p.t. or water therapy suggested.please suggest most effective.I still walk but not long distance, and only use ice packs for some relief.
Hi, For this condition, exercise is good but low impact such as swimming or cycling. This will help maintain your mobility. A physio will be able to advise on exercises to build core muscle strength to support your back. You may be helped by paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly. Epidural steroid injections are a recognised part of treatment and will reduce pain and inflammation in the nerves so I suggest you reconsider your decision regarding the epidural. Surgery is unlikely to be needed as this is grade 1 which means it is mild. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
