What Treatment To Take For Vocal Nodules, Speech Therapy Or Surgery?

Hi there, I have been diagnosed with having vocal nodules, fully developed. My specialist recommended me to speech therapy, which I have been going to. I have a couple of questions :
1. Is it normal for my throat to be really sore and painful? Everything on the internet only states hoarseness.
2. My specialist has not recommended surgery. Normally in these situations, is removing them not an option?

Hello and welcome to health care magic.
Vocal nodules are caused by voice abuse - that is too much talking especially at a higher voice or due to over straining of vocal cords, say by singing difficult songs. Most vocal nodules are occupation related especially in teachers singers and politicians.
The usual therapy we recommend is voice rest and speech therapy. Most of the vocal nodules regress by themselves and surgeries are not needed. If the nodules are persisting even after therapy or they are causing severe distress then surgery can be done.
So my advice is to continue the current speech therapy for sometime and see whether the symptoms are reducing. If not you can go for surgical removal.
Hope this discussion will be helpful to you.
Thank you.
