What Treatment Is Suggested For Being Anemic During Pregnancy?

My daughter is anemic and pregnant. What can she safely eat while taking doctor prescribed prenatals. She's read that eating liver is not a good choice as she'll get too much Vitamin A. What can you recommend that's a natural food to boost her iron intake?

hello and welcome to health care magic forum,

I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.

There are a lot of food choices for anemia. The principal is to eat foods rich in iron and vitamins to help improve heme and proteins to increase globin [which is a protein].

Iron rich fruits and vegetables are apples, sapotas, water melon, strawberries, carrots, beet, tomatoes, dates and all leafy green vegetables like spinach.
Sprouted beans are a good source of b vitamins. It is best to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables as each one provides some part that is needed to build up the hemoglobin. White part of a boiled egg every day is good for proteins. Ask her to add one extra snack during the day time to her usual meals and include two fruits, any seasonal ones do well.
Meat contains iron that is better converted to hemoglobin so use of fish and chicken in grilled or steamed form are useful once a day.
Dry fruits like almonds, pistachios etc must be taken in small quantities to supply rare minerals that are not easily found in our routine food.

Protein powders also contain iron and vitamins and can be taken with milk during bedtime if desired.

The amount of iron required during pregnancy is high and diet may not always be able to provide for it especially in anemia so it is advisable to take iron tablets as prescribed by your doctor to fill up the deficit faster.
Hope this helped to answer your question.
Thanks for using HCM.
Have a good day.
