my obgyn keeps saying that my cervix is so weak that it opens when i sneeze or cough adn i can't even be on a bumpy road. shouldn't be on bedrest or in the hospital if it is this bad? i am 22 weeks pregnant. i have had cervical cancer removed which i was told was cause by high risk HPV. this was 4 years ago. my ob insists that it is the cause of my weak cervix. i feel fine. should i switch dr's? and why wouldn't he put me on bedrest if he was so worried about my child?
Hay, if your cervix is week, it needs treatment. Changing the doctor will not strengthen your cervix.
For such week cervix (incompetent os) way back in 1955, the Indian great doctor Dr. V. N. Shirodkar has invented a surgery which has given motherhood to so many unlucky mothers in the world. It was a surgery of cervical reinforcement by suturing it (cervical tightening).
Since your cervix is (probably partially) removed, such reinforcement in your case would be rather a skilful job. Perhaps it may have to be done by opening the abdomen, if vaginal approach becomes impossible. Without such cervical tightening, there is a risk of premature delivery between 14 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Till you undergo the cervical tightening surgery, be lying on the bed with head low position. This head low position is not to be achieved by just putting pillows under the feet; you have to physically lift the foot end of the bed by 6-9 inches. However, please try to get this surgery performed at the earliest. It has to be performed only after 14 weeks of pregnancy. Even after the cervical tightening, considering your previous cervical surgery, you will have to take rest in head low position throughout the pregnancy along with uterine relaxants.
Please do not take this condition lightly and follow doctor's advice religiously.
