What Precautions Should Be Taken To Prevent Internal Damage After Consuming Cleaning Liquid?

I drank around 40 ml of phenol (toilet cleaner) yesterday around 5:45 A.M, within 15 mints I took a glass of water in which salt was diluted to induce vomiting, I vomit and took another glass which further induce vomiting, I was having sore throat, burning in throat, after that at 8 AM I took Risek insta (Omeprazole+ sodium bicorbonate). Around 8:53 i was having slight headache and liquid motion. I didn't eat anything for around 30 hours, only drunk water and sugar diluted water. I took another Risek insta today at around 1:15 PM, but there are blisters in throat. what further precautions should i take to avoid any serious damage?

Hello,

First of all, you should NOT have induced vomiting but you should have contacted any kind of health personnel right away. You should have taken olive oil and charcoal supplements, instead of inducing vomiting and diluting phenol as this has increased its absorption and potential damages.

Phenol is a very toxic substance that can cause a lot of damage to your body, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain when taken in any route (skin, respiratory, ingestion) and specific damages to your gastrointestinal system when ingested, such as corrosion of mouth, throat, stomach, esophagus, bleeding, narrowing of esophagus, renal and heart damage, etc.

You should seek medical attention and evaluation immediately!

You can not manage this type of poisoning by yourself, therefore please contact emergency services. Blisters in the throat are very worrying as they could block your airways and therefore urgent assistance is needed. Medical staff will assist you and offer you all the support necessary and also instruct you about decontamination of your skin (if contaminated) and the surroundings.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
