What Medical Condition Causes Frequent Urination, Weight Loss, Severe Back Pain, Pain In The Knees, Elbows And Shoulders And Weakness?

My 5'10" 93 year old father, was given Furosemide to reduce edema swelling in his legs. After two nights of repeated peeing, his weight dropped from 138 to 123. He now is has extreme back pain (new) and increased pain from arthritis in his knees, elbows and shoulders. He also has lost all strength, can't stand or lift himself up out of the wheelchair I have put him him. Would dehydration cause these symptoms, and what is the remedy. I can't get him to drink more that a glass or orange juice every two hours or so.

Hi,

Sorry to hear of his problems. Yes, it looks like he has too much water with furosemide. We generally recommend furosemide to reduce weight by about 1kg per day.

But your father has lost more than 10 kg in 2 days which means too much fluid loss. So the weakness May also be caused by the same dehydration.

I personally would have advised to reduce the dose of furosemide and also to check his electrolytes along with giving some fluids depending on his hydration status.

So please talk to your doctor in this regard for better management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
