What May Have Caused Yellow Discharge From Areola After Breastfeeding?

I have had a slight clear/yellow discharge from my right areola since yesterday, slight dull pain and occational tingling or itching. Feels similar to breast changes i experienced while breastfeeding. (I am not pregnant or breastfeeding) My mother is a breastcancer survivor. should i see a doctor right away for testing or see if it goes away?

Hi,

The possible causes of your problem are:
- Friction due to clothes or frequent checking for discharge can lead to and also can increase the breast secretion.
- Infection of the breast tissues, especially ducts and alveoli can lead to discharge and pain.
- Increased serum prolactin levels can lead to to breast discharge.

As you are having a family history of breast cancer better to get examined. So, please consult your gynecologist once, get examined and undergo either sonomammography or mammography and serum prolactin levels, with this work up the possible cause of your problem can be identified and treatment can be taken accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
