What Leads To Severe Pain And Bruise In Gums?

So.. It all started as sum minor gum pain on the top back left side... As days went by it spread to the bottom also.. (6 days later) The pain became so bad I went to ER and of course they told me go to dentist and gave me something for pain and to fight infection.. Now today makes day 9...yesterday went to dentist, he said it looks like periodontal disease (I think that's right) so he prescribed me some oxycodone for paint and a oral rinse.... But terminology in my mouth locs like its getting bigger and also is starting to bruise near root of tooth... I'm really concerned about it but I still haven't finished my meds and I have an appointment in 2 weeks for deep cleaning and possible extraction... Should I be concerned about this or finish my meds and pray this swelling goes down?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain swelling and pain in gums is a sign of gum disease causing inflammation of gums and is known as Gingivitis and when it involves deeper tissues it can cause destruction to the underlying bone and pocket formation between the gums and the bone and there is further proliferation of bacteria in the pockets causing deeper infection and the entire sequence is known as PERIODONTITIS..

In case of swelling of gums antibiotics like amoxicillin and metronidazole can provide relief..

For pain anti inflammatory painkillers like Advil or Ibuprofen can be taken..

Topical application of metronidazole containing ointments can help in local clearing of the infection..

Antimicrobial mouth rinses taken concentrated without diluting with water can be helpful..

Saline gargles cab be relieving..

Along with it deep scaling and root planing done by a dentist and the medicines taken orally can have a cumulative effect and can lead to faster healing..

Hope your query is solved..
