What Is The Treatment For Tonsillitis?

I ve recently had tonsillitis but only on one tonsil, I first was put on a medicine form of penicillin but after a couple of days it wasn t working so was given tablets. I was only given a pack of 28 tablets and so I have now run out, I was fine for a couple of days but when I woke up in the night last night, I was finding it uncomfortable to swallow so took some tablets, and this morning I looked at my throat to see the other tonsil (not the one that was previously affected) had yellow sploges and was very swollen. Is this normal or do I need to go back to the doctor? I m 17 and only suffered from tonsillitis which was a couple of weeks ago!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Severe coughing for 3 weeks, not responding to cough syrup and consulting 2 Doctors, shortness of breath and so on could be due to one of the following reasons:
Pharyngitis with irritation or GERD.
Bronchitis.
Post-sinusitis with post nasal drip.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult another Doctor and insist for investigations:
Tests of blood like CBC, ESR, blood sugar and as required.
X-ray o Chest and sinuses and CT scan if any positive findings.
Further management as per the findings should help you.
Recurrent tonsillitis in a young person in spite of proper courses of antibiotic should be investigated further as you have noticed swollen tonsils with yellow sponges.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation.
ENT Endoscopy to see if there is any infection in nose or coming from sinus opening or postnasal drip.
Throat swab from the tonsils for gram staining, culture and sensitivity.
Tests of blood for White cell counts, sugar, preferably blood culture and sensitivity as this helps.
All these will help to find a proper underlying cause and thus helps proper management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
