What Is The Treatment For The Swollen And Painful Salivary Glands?

I was in a car accident. I stopped for a red light while the car behind hadn't even seen the the change. My car was rear-ended by her Tahoe at 40 mph. I have TMJ and almost immediately started to feel pain on my face and jaw line. I have been going to physical therapy but they seem to be concentrating on my back while my face is still in pain. Presently, my left side of my jaw is swollen & is very painful. I am going to see a TMJ specialist tomorrow but who shall I see regarding my swollen, painful salivary glands?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain pain on your face and jaw can be either due to TMJ , along with it there can also be damage to the Trigeminal nerve or its branches leading to facial pain on the affected side..
Swollen jaw is not necessarily due to swollen salivary gland and can also be due to inflammation caused as a result of trauma and TMJ can also be a cause of swelling over the jaw..

As you are going to consult a TMJ Specialist you need not to worry as he will evaluate you clinically and can also advise you to get a full mouth x ray done known as ORTHOPANTOMOGRAM [OPG] so the exact condition of the jaw bone and the the jaw joint and also look for hairline too and can advise you appropriate fractures if any and can plan the treatment accordingly..

If there is swelling in the salivary glands or lymph nodes he can diagnose it too and advise appropriate treatment..
In case for salivary gland problem you can also consult an Oral physician..

As of now you can take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and muscle relaxant containing chlorzoxasone for relief..

Avoid excessive mouth opening and do not eat hard foods..

Do cold compresses over the swelling..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
