What Is The Treatment For Right Colon Bleeding?

My mom presented to er with gi bleeding last thursday. they discovered the source of bleeding and cut out that portion of the right colon. She has had over 12 blood transfusions. They said post surgery that she had blood that was in the colon that they wanted her to pass to make sure there was no new bleeding. She had a hematocrit done today and it was 21. They are giving 2 more units of blood. The hospitalist said it was a mystery as it was 35 yesterday. Could this be another bleed or is there another reason for it to drop so much. She only has one kidney and I am concerned of the strain on it

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query about your mother.
Noted that she bled so much from the right colon that they had to do the surgery, needed 12 blood transfusions and needs 2 more as the hematocrit dropped to 21 from 35 and the Doctors say that it was a mystery.
The cause will be found out after the biopsy if done.
The cause of the sudden drop of hematocrit are:
Actually homeostasis as we say takes time and is dependent upon many factors, intrinsic bodily healing ways and so on.
Secondly if the hematocrit is done on bleeding it may appear falsely higher because of of hemo-concentration and once proper intravenous fluids are replaced it will just show a sudden fall.
Recheck the hematocrit after 48 hours and other factors like hemoglobin also needs to be taken into consideration.
Regular kidney function have to be done as you Mother has only one kidney.
