General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi Nancy.
Thanks for your query.

The cause of the pain above the waistline on the right side has to be diagnosed on physical examination by a Surgeon and diagnostic tests undertaken to prove or to rule out the probable causes.

The probable causes are:
Right kidney infection / impacted stone in pelvi-ureteric junction.
Gall bladder stones and / or infection.
Liver pathology.
Colitis on the right side.
Appendicitis particularly in retro-cecal position. and so on.

I would advise you the following
Get the blood , urine and stool tests done.
Ultrasonography as a preliminary survey to find the cause.
CT scan of the abdomen and other investigations to confirm.

Take a proper course of an antibiotic, metronidazole and symptomatic treatment . You may need an additional antibiotic with the Sulfamethoxazole.
