What Is The Treatment For Herniated Disc At L5?

Thanks, My 54 year old daughter has a herniated disc at L5- New laptop keyboard that I m not familiar with yet. Sorry. My daughter has been diagnosed with a herniated disc at L5-S1. She has had epidural injections, the first one did nothing at all, the second one worked great for 6 weeks and she was back to her normal self. the third one is scheduled but the back surgeon had told her if the third one doesn t work then they will go straight to surgery (hon-invasive). However, he now is telling her that since her pain is now effecting both buttocks and legs instead of just one leg, he doesn t want to do the surgery. Is it normal for the pain to move from one leg to the other? She and I am very confused. She is in severe pain. Thank you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

It seems that your daughter is suffering from lumbar disc degeneration with PIVD where the nerves get compressed by the protruded disc.
There are several treatment modalities with medicines, physiotherapy and with injections in the back called epidural injections and root/facet blocks.
If she don’t get better with these treatment ,I suggest her undergo surgery, by which the nerves are decompressed by removing the protruded disc (discectomy), which would significantly improve her symptoms

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
