What Is The Treatment For Floaters?

Hello

I went for an eye test two weeks ago. I told my optometrist that I had been seeing a fairly large circle in the vision of my left eye. I see it when I close my eyes, when I blink or if I cover my right eye. Sometimes it is brown and at other times, it appears to be a purplish colour. My previous eye test had been 10 months earlier but because I was having much more trouble with close-up work I decided to go for a test. The sight in my left eye had previously been the better of the two but now is the worst. It goes worse in the evening and when I cover my right eye and look at my husband in dim light his face appears darker. A white computer screen appears beige rather than white, through my left eye only. I expected to be told that it was a floater but the optometrist said that she could see the circle on my macula. She referred my to an opthalmologist and said I would have to wait until January. Two days later she rang me and said she had decided to make it an urgent referral and told me to go to my GP. This I did. I am waiting for an appointment but have been told by the hospital that the earliest they have is 31st December. I am just wondering how urgent this is.

Hello
It seems from the history that you are having floaters.
Floaters are usually caused by opacities in the vitreous as a result of vitreous degenerations, vitreous detachment...
Floaters by themselves are harmless but they require evaluation to rule out retinal conditions like retinal tears which may require prophylactic laser treatment.
Floaters if associated with flashes of light require urgent evaluation otherwise only floaters may not require very urgent evaluation.
Hence I advice you to consult your doctor for examination and treatment accordingly.

Thank you
