What Is The Treatment For Childhood Absence Seizures With No Hindrance?
My 7 yr old has childhood absence seizures. They last only 3-5 seconds and he has them on average 3-5 per day that I catch. They do not affect his school work or anything else. What do I do? I'm afraid a specialist is going to recommend drugs but I do not want to do that when they are not affecting him. His teacher and I have been tracking them to see if they become more frequent. We have been aware of them for about 8 mths. At this point I don't know what my next step should be?
Hi... I understand your apprehension regarding the anti-seizure medications. But as the episodes are becoming more frequent - the kid definitely needs to be evaluated and has to be put on medications.
My suggestion to you at this point of time will be to -
1. Video graph the episode of your suspected absence seizure. 2. Show the video tot he pediatrician or neurologist you consult. 3. Consult a pediatrician or pediatric neurologist. 4. He will require - MRI brain and EEG or video EEG to be precise.
If absence seizures are confirmed by the above tests - then the drug of choice will be - Ethosuximide.
