What Is The Treatment For Blood Clots Attached To The Stool?

I have a history of ulcerative colitis and ibs.
The condition has gone in and out of remission for twenty years.
I am a fifty two year old asplenic female.

I have noticed lately red blood clots ( similar to those passed during menstruation ) attached to stools on occasion, and today after a large bowl movement, the smell of ammonia was present at the end of defecting.

I do not have health insurance.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Condition is in relation with flare of IBS associated with intestinal infection.
Certain guidelines for better recovery:
• Drink plenty of liquids preferably boiled water, coconut water, lemon juice, green tea, coffee, buttermilk to maintain hydration
• Consume small amount of soft diet at regular intervals
• Avoid all oily, spicy, non-vegetarian stuffs till possible
• Diet should have more of probiotics as fresh curd

In our clinic we recommend certain gut-specific antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, bulk laxative, or probiotics according to the stool consistency to cure it faster. Avoid smoking or alcohol in any form. Remain ambulatory, regular walking, exercises, and yoga help a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
