What Is The Treatment For UTI?

I started taking Nitrofuran mono/mcr 100mg twice daily yesterday. It is bothering my eyes and leaving me foggy headed. I am appalled at the side effects on the pharmaceutical sheet. Lung problems long after ending treatment of UTI with Nirtofuran and potential for C Diff {had once before and never want to have again} weeks or months after treatment has been stopped. Why would any Dr. prescribe this for a UTI? In addition, I am a smoker. Yes, I know I should quit but I can't just stop cold turkey.

Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

I understand your concerns and will try to answer at your questions.

Why would any Dr. prescribe this for a UTI? Nitrofuran and its metabolites are excreted mainly by the kidneys, for that reason they destroy the bacteria in the bladder. I understand that this product has many side efects,so do the other type of antibiotics. If you are not comfortable with this antibiotic, you should talk with your doctor to change the product and give you another type of antibacterial.
To treat UTI there are other options tho, like the ones that i am writing below:
-fluorquinolones (ciprofloxacine for ex)
-cephalosporins (cefdinir,cefixime ex)
-bactrime (Bactrim contains a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)
-tetracycline family (doxycicline ex)

All these antibiotics, have side effects, but you can talk with your physician/family doctor to change the product with the one that suits you more. If you did an urine culture, than the doctor will prescribe to you the right antibiotic that fights and kills the bacteria. So there is the possibility that one or more from the family of antibiotics that i have written get excluded.

If you have any other question, feel free to contact me.
