What Is The Shadow On The Ct Scan That Looks Like Kidney Stone?

I was recently informed I have a stone in my left kidney as this was shown on a ct scan - 10 mm. However, today I was informed that it is not a stone only a shadow and nothing to worry about. I have been experiencing abdominal pain since 10th December and was in hospital for 5 days. I am still in incredible pain and blood in my urine and am now waiting to see a gynaecologist and the gastro clinic. I am disappointed that I was mis informed and nothing has been done. What could this shadow be?

Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic.
I think you must have been told about a stone on the ultrasound scan as a stone appears as a shadowing structure on ultrasound. Usually there is nothing else which will give such a shadow on ultrasound, but sometimes renal sinus fat (which is normal) can mimic a small stone in appearance. The size of the stone is also not small (10 mm) so it must have been misdiagnosed on a ultrasound. I think, later you must have undergone a ct scan which had confirmed that you don't have a stone. A stone is easily picked up on a CT Scan and will not be missed. There are hardly 1-2 % of stones which are missed on CT Scan so it is unlikely that you are having a stone if it is not seen on CT Scan.
Sometimes a stone is misdiagnose on USG and confirmed on CT Scan that it is there or not.
For your pain and infection, you might have some other infection in your urinary tract causing these problems. Please undergo the normal urine test and consult a urologist for the same.
Hope it sorts your problem and wishing you a speedy recovery.
