What Is The Right Diet To Control Weight When Under Medication For Interstitial Cystitis?

I suffer from interstitial cystitis, non bacterial, I have been taking amtryplyine for two years, it helps me sleep and not have to get up so much, however, I am gaining weight, I keep my IC under control by watching my diet, however, I can t eat some of the things that used to keep me trim because they trigger the flare ups.

Hello and welcome to HCM! I am so glad you came here to talk to me. You are gaining weight more because of the drug you are on, is it amitriptyline? That med will cause carbohydrate cravings and an increase in appetite. Generally, my clients try lowering the total amount of carbohyrate for a few weeks and then I try to have them avoid high glycemic carbohydrates as long as they are on that medication. I only promote stevia as a sugar substitute for greatest success if you are going to use one at all.

De-caffeinated green tea will give your weight loss process a kick to get the process started. Drink 6 oz /day if it does not bother your IC.

Remember, overall calories count as well. Take the calories you usually consume and subtract 500 calories per day for one pound weight loss per week and 1000 calories from your daily intake to lose 2 pounds per week.

I can't begin to tell you the mood lifting effects of exercise. Exercise will also increase thermogenesis helping you lose weight.

Best wishes on the first step to the rest of your life! Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
