What Is The Retesting Period For The Hemoglobin?
How soon can I have my hemoglobin retested. Reading of 16.3(lab reference range 11 to 15.8 -- used to be 14 to 17 or 18 --so in recent past would not have been considered high.) Past readings over last 20 years have been 15.6,15,15.9. I am 65 and have know other abnormal labs. Thanks

Red blood cells have a life of about 120 days, after which the old ones get replaced. As such you may repeat hemoglobin after 3 months. It is better to get complete hemogram and peripheral blood smear also at the same time. This will show individual blood components and also features of platelets and white blood cells. The size, shape, volume of the red blood cells will also be analyzed.
