What Is The Remedy For The Hair Dye Allergy Causing Rashes On Feet And Back?

Hi Dr Grief; I am currently suffering from hair dye allergy and it is now in the 4-5th week. No weeping but just a very bad rash on my feet, back, groin and arms. I am male, my hair is long, (to the middle of my back) and dyed it with a coloring that I got from a reputable beauty supply shop; did not do a patch test. Dyed it for a movie that we are doing. Allegra has worked well but I decided today to bear it and hopefully my body's immune system would kick in. It did not and rebounded with a furor. I am a Registered Nurse of 20 years and understand the working process of the body. Is there a wash that I can use to remove this dye. I wear a hairpiece as well and was dying my own hair to match it. I have shaved my head in the past and am thinking about doing it as soon as I finish the movie. Allegra doses had to be boosted and after a week I was taking 180 mg bid and tid; am thinking of giving Claritin a try until this rash subsides. Any advice will help at this point. Many have warned me against steroids and I have had a reaction to them in the past when younger. I am 58 currently and take lisinopril/hctz for hypertension,.

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

Apart from oral antihistamine you certainly would benefit from using topical steroids (if not oral steroids).

Oral steroids for a short duration (7 days) are absolutely safe and would greatly benefit you with the allergy. If you are totally against using oral steroids then you can use topical steroids (which are totally devoid of systemic side effects of oral steroids).

If I was your treating doctor I would have asked you to use Topical mometasone lotion for appliaction on hairy areas (scalp) and topical mometasone cream for face, neck and back.

take care
regards
