What Is The Remedy For Digestion Problems With Hernia?

I am a 70 year old woman who has been diagnosed with: organoaxial gastric volvulus and esophageal dysmotility. I have had a hiatal hernia for around 25 years and also GERD. The hernia is very large now. I have been having digestion problems for at least three months. My gastroenterologist would only refer me to one surgeon and I want a second opinion and am having difficulty finding another surgeon here in Knoxville. The surgeon I saw had only ten years experience and said he has performed 25 of this type surgery with 95% success. I have read online that this type of surgery is rare?? The diagnosis was finally made from an upper GI series. Should I continue to seek a second surgeon s opinion? Carolyn H. Thomas

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
I understand your concern for your symptoms and urge to take second opinion
1) Although I have not enough experience of 10 years as compared to primary surgeon to whom you consulted but I feel confident enough to provide guidance on this.
2) You should go ahead with surgery in spite of seeking another investigation.
3) Your symptoms are due to acid reflux and this reflux is due to hiatus hernia which was confirmed previously.
4) Treatment/surgery for hiatus hernia is not depend on severity or extent of hernia. Thus once confirmed, it is not necessary to undergo another test to evaluate extent or severity of hernia.
5) Persistence of symptoms in spite of medications, itself is an indication to undergo surgery.
6) Surgery will be laparoscopic and it is completely safe in term of complication and success.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you.
Have a good day!
