What Is The Reason For Swollen Neck, Fatigue, Scab In Back Of Throat?

My 23 yr old daughter has been sick for 15 days now. Just finished a Z-pack. Has been 2 3 different hospital emergency rooms. She started out with a fever 102, body aches, fatigue, headache, neck pain, sore throat, earache, vomiting, abdominal pain, runny nose, cough. They swabbed throat for strep, swabbed nose for flu. Negative on all. They said it was viral and sent her home. ! week later much worse sore throat, unable to eat and drink, very swollen neck. This er visit they gave her the Z pack and sent her on her way. Z pack was done Friday. Thursday she went to another er after not being able to stand the pain of her throat. This dr gives her lidacaine liquid to gargle and injects her with steroid for swelling. She is worse again. She has a scab in the back of her throat and her throat is painfully raw. Her neck is very swollen, she is extremely fatugued. Her mono blood test was negative. Please help, very worried mother

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
Pharyngitis can produce very severe throat pain and painful enlargement of lymph nodes leading to swelling of the neck.
Complications of pharyngitis / tonsillitis like abscess around the tonsil, abscess around the pharynx, etc can produce very severe pain, prostration and inability to swallow.
Since you have been to the ER so many times, I am pretty sure the doctors would have looked for and ruled out all the complications.
She will probably do well with appropriate antibiotics and pain killers.
Please go back to your doctor and let them examine her again and do the needful.
Till then try to get adequate nutrition, drink lots of water, do warm salt water gargling and avoid airconditioning.
Regards, Dr Kishori.
