What Is The Reason For Sudden Increase In Heart Rate?

My 16 year old son started having sudden increases in heart rate yesterday. He said he doesnt know why. He doesn't drink caffeine and these episodes are happening during rest/ not with exercise. This is the first time this has ever happened. It happened 3 times yesterday and twice today. Once while he was driving. He is athletic and just finished up football season a couple if weeks ago. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

hello dear!

sudden increase in heart rate is a sign of special heart arrythmia called SVT. please do following things to confirm it is SVT.

1) heart rate increase is sudden and it stops sudden
2) count his pulse and make sure it is greater than 130 per minute
3) take an ECG in nearest clinic while he is having this attack this will help doctors diagnosing his disease.

if it is SVT then it is not that bad. because you can give him some medication that decrease heart rate for example beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers. if these medication failed to control his heart rate then EP/RFA has to be performed. in our centre it cost almost 1500 USD and success rate is 95%.

Hope it is answer to your question.
