What Is The Prognosis Of Inoperable Stage 1V Ovarian Cancer?

A dear friend was just diagnosed with inoperable stage 1V ovarian cancer. The surgeon was unable to remove any organs because he said that her intestines were bound together with her ovaries and also said that he cancer has spread to her lungs. 2 days after the surgery, she is vomitting blood. What is her prognosis? Will Chemo shrink her tumors so that she can have successful debulking surgery. How long can she live? She is extremely emaciated. Help!!!

Oncologist, Surgical 's  Response
The prognosis I am afraid to say, for stage 4 ovarian cancer is quite poor. The average survival is 1 year with treatment. The treatment now is chemotherapy 6-8 cycles followed by assessment for surgery. However, with the emaciated state that you are mentioning, she may not be able to take the entire chemotherapy in which case the prognosis worsens. Presently first she has to recover from the surgery before you can think of starting chemotherapy.

Oncologist Dr. Deepak Sundriyal's  Response
Hello. I appreciate your feeling towards your friend. It is better to shrink her tumor by giving her a few rounds of chemo therapy. This tumor is very much chemo responsive and it will respond beautifully. Her general condition will also improve with it. After that debulking surgery can be attempted. Again after surgery few rounds of chemo will be required to remove the minimum residual cancer cells. The prognosis in stage 4 is not so good. The usual survival of these patients varies from patient to patient. They may live upto 2 to 3 years on an average; sometimes more. So it is difficult to predict. Hope you now understand her illness. Thanks
regards
