What Is The Prognosis Of Has Hepatic Encephalopathy?

My husband has hepatic encepathalopathy, and now cancer. What is your prognosis? He is on transplant list at Penn. The neurological symptoms depress me so much, I fear for his future. He also is very argumentative, very cold at times, & sleeps a lot, even though he takes his meds.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hepatic encephalopathy is a late stage complication when the liver goes into failure. The symptoms included altered sleep cycles and altered behavior to an extent.

He needs to work on getting the liver function tests within normal limits with his doctors. Ensure he does not contract an infection, drinks adequate water and has regular bowel movements.

This will help prevent the precipitation of a worse episode of encephalopathy. I hope the transplant comes through at the earliest. Wishing you and your husband the best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
