What Is The Prognosis For An Infant With Swollen Head?

My nephew is two months old and he was apparently dropped on his head...he was put into an induced coma due to swelling? I cannot get straight answers and this is all I know about it.. I have to wonder, what are his chances of recovering completely or ....... what are his chances of not, or being brain damaged. Please know I can handle the true facts. Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are typical of a condition called hydrocephalus. The prognosis will depend on the cause.

In most cases, the results are good with surgical intervention (VP shunt is the routine surgery).

However, in some infants, there may be an underlying tumor or other defects where the prognosis will be bad. Consult a neurologist and he will direct you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
