What Is The Need Of Serta For Diabetes?

Hello,

My mother is a daibetic patient since 2006. In 2011 she had an engioplasty and post that she was having GluconormSR 500mg for her diabeties. Recently she had slight heart problem and her sugar level was high. It was arount 123 Mg/dL (Glucose fasting) and and 198 mg/DL (Glucose PP).

Doctor has prescribed her ISTAMET 50/500 mg + Serta 25mg. Please advise why is Serta 25mg prescribed along with ISTAMET

Hello there,
I understand your concern regarding your mother's medications. It would have helped to know her age. From what I understand her blood sugar levels were marginally high last time. Istamet is a combination of two types of medicines and both the drugs in the combination are good for diabetes control. Serta however is a medicine used as an antidepressant and has no role in diabetes control. I personally do not know the reason why she has been prescribed the medicine. Did she have any episode of depression or does your treating physician have any reason to suspect depression. Do discuss these things with your physician maybe in the absence of your mother so that you can discuss freely and do not scare your mother if at all. I am sure your physician will be able to allay your concerns.
Istamet (50/500) is the right drug for her and do continue diet and exercise patterns as much as allowed for her other conditions and age.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
