What Is The Life Expectancy In A Stage 7 Vascular Dementia Patient?

my mother is 92, diabetic since age 76, I believe she is in the 7th. stage of vascular dementia--she has not been able to walk since Feb, 2010 and she can hardly transfer, she cannot feed herself, except to barly hang on to a small glass of milk and drink it. she has trouble swallowing her food. sometimes, she does not know what to do with the food ie chew, swallow etc. She says she is not hungry. Mom is in a very good adult family home, as I could not take care of her, I cared for her for 2 1/2 years in our home.

My question is how long will my Mother suffer like this? She has told me that she wants to die and I ask her why? She said she is tired of all this!

Thanks for contacting HCM

I am deeply sorry to hear about your mother and her suffering from vascular dementia. From your description she sounds like she is the later stages of dementia. Her overall life expectancy is less than 1 year and maybe less if she stops eating and drinking. The usual cause of death from dementia is the inability to take in enough nutrition. I wish you and your mother all the blessings you need
