What is the general advice on taking broad spectrum antibiotics and the combined oral contraceptive pill?

Hi, I was just wondering what the general advice is on taking broad spectrum antibiotics and the combined oral contraceptive pill? I have heard loads of contradicting information, like the nurse who prescribed me the pill saying extra precautions were needed but someone else in exactly the same situation being told that lymecycline (the antibiotic we re both on for acne and have been for a while) has no effect on the pill at all, and having looked around that the WHO and also the royal college of obs. and gyn. (in the UK) have both advised that more recent studies suggest such antib s have negligible effect and the old studies which suggested they do were flawed. I guess I just need to hear a more definitive answer from someone to be sure,! Would be most grateful for a reply as I don t want to have to take up a slot at my doctor s surgery for this, they re really busy and I don t want to use up an appointment that could be used by someone who s really sick.

Hello.
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic forum.
Lymecycline does not affect the metabolism of oral pills so does not decrease their efficacy. You can continue taking both safely and you do not need any extra protection for having sex unless you forget taking your pill.It is the Erythromycin group that decreases the efficacy of pills.

Hi doctor, I m 24 years old. I m in a relationship with a guy. I ve not had been penetrated yet. Yesterday he touched me and gave me oral. He did not ejaculate anywhere near me, but we did have some genital rubbing (he had his jeans on, and I had my underwear on). I m worried about my chances of getting pregnant due to this - yesterday was the 14th day after my last period, so I could have been ovulating when this happened. Do you think I should take one of the morning-after pills? Please advice.

My father, age 78, is in excellent health and only takes medication for hypercholesterolemia (low 200 s). He recently started Erythromycin for head and chest congestion and sore throat. After taking this for a few days he had blood blisters erupt in his scalp and ears. His head felt a lot of pressure and he was worried he might be having a stroke. His neck and head were stiff with some numbness in his right arm. He DC d the antibiotic and went to his doctor, who placed him on Prednisone. Now he is a little groggy and isn t feeling well so he stopped the Prednisone. He sounds weak and we aren t sure why he was put on the Prednisone. My question is - why take Prednisone if the blisters are drying up? What is the benefit versus the risks?
