General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In pregnancy, the daily requirement for folic acid, iron and calcium etc is increased. The recommended daily allowance of folic acid for pregnant women is at 2.6 micrograms and any level between 400 to 800 microgram is safe during pregnancy. However, the dose for a woman who has a previously delivered baby with a neural tube defect is increased up to 4000 micrograms starting one month before pregnancy. In your case you don't need to switch to 5 mg, rather you can increase folic acid intake in your food if you want. Folic acid rich foods are eggs, yogurt, milk and cheese.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
