General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Valproate, when used for manic or psychiatric problems, is usually started at 500 to 750 mg, and then gradually increased until its effect can be seen. Doses as high as 1,500 to 2,500 mg are often used, and the maximum dose for someone weighing 160 pounds would be 4,300 mg in one day.

In your situation, a 750 mg dose is relatively low, and it may be he has a bad reaction with Valproate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
