XR means extended release. Seroquel (quetiapine) is immediate release and is having lesser duration of action than the extended release version. On the other hand extended release has longer duration of action and usually administered once daily. The doctor might have changed the formulations according to the need of the patient.
Similarly Depakote XR(extended release) has a longer duration of action. Delayed release formulations means the release and absorption of drugs are delayed so that less amount is released in stomach and gastric irritation can be avoided. So the change could have been done to avoid gastric irritation.
Hope the above information helps. Thank you.
