what is the chance of a 54 year old woman with atrial septal defect and is prone to infections living after open heart surgery? She is scheduled for surgery this coming friday and as her daughter I am scared that she may be making the wrong decision about going through with the surgery.

i understand your concern, i've been in similar positions, but if you think about it, she could get infections from not having the surgery also. I guess you have to be optimistic. If she goes through with the surgery she could come out perfectly fine, or she may have an infection. If she doesnt, she could be fine for awhile, or she could get in worse conditions from not having the surgery. Surgeries are big, and everyone is scared of something going wrong, but if it means having a longer life with the people you love, even if its not much longer than that without the surgery, i think it's worth it. Dont you. Hope this helps somehow. I'll keep you in my prayers, and know my thoughts are with you.
