What Is The Causer For Nerve Pain And Testicular Pain After Inguinal Hernia Repair When On Gabapentin?

Son had inguinal hernia repair with mesh on September 2011 after a lengthy process of trying to find out what was wrong as he had testicular pain (only 14 years old at time). He discovered his own hernia. One year later, testicular pain again. Hernia on other side; surgery October 2012 with mesh. Doctor said at time of second surgery he also had an umbilical hernia. No on-going issues until June 2013. Then he had testicular pain after a period of standing on his feet which has not gone away. Surgeon states that his hernia repair areas are solid. Currently being treated for nerve pain with gabapentin (400 mg - 3 time/day), but that is not relieving his pain. He has been given antibiotics for possible infection (no change), steriod injections (did not really work). Can his umbilical hernia be the cause? Testicular pain seems to be worse with standing; also his testicles hurt when urinating and having a bowel movement.

HI. Gone through the history. The pain which worsens on standing, straining at urination or stool is more probably due to Varicose veins getting swollen up. That is probably the reason why gabapentin , antibiotics and steroids are not working. The best way is to see an Urologist and undergo ultrasonography and color doppler study in lying down and standing position ( both). Umbilical hernia can not be the cause. Simple clinical test which can be done at home is to ask him to sun a bit - stand still- bend completely forwards ; if the pain or/ and swelling reduces - this can be what I said. I would be very happy to know the results after you undergo examination and tests. ( why was the mesh put in in a boy at the age of 14?)
