What Is The Cause Of Raised SGPT And SGOT Levels?

My 19 year-old son received a blood test for insurance and his SGOT (AST) level was 193 in January and his SGPT (ALT) was 66. My son DOES NOT drink alcohol, use drugs or over the counter medicine. My son said he worked out 7 hours before the exam. Do you think the increase in his levels are related to the physical activity or should I take him to the doctors ASAP?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Though these enzymes are found mainly in the liver, smaller amounts can be found in the muscles and other areas of the body.

It is possible that the physical activity may have played a role in the increase though it should not be to this extent.
He may need to repeat to confirm these levels. If there are still elevated then imaging of the liver and blood tests may be needed.

I hope this helps
