headaches well for about a week now when i cough i get a headache that feels someone hit me in the back of the head with a 2x4, its right in the spot where i broke one of the bones that connects the skull to the spine. it s been over 4 years since that injury without a issue till now so i don t think it s related. it only happens when i cough and sometimes it s bad enough that it brings me to my knees. what is it?
You may be battling a viral syndrome that could be causing a sterile cough as well as cough attack (continuously coughing for a period of time triggered by an inciting event; COUGH ATTACK). The area where you had the accident may be healed but specific pain in this area during one of your cough attacks could be expected to cause INCREASED pain in the area since it was previously injured.
Someone with COUGH HEADACHE could also be demonstrating a potential pathology of an intracranial aneurysm. Therefore, in all patients in which there doesn't seem to be a reasonable explanation for a cough (such as viral syndrome, etc.) I will not hesitate getting an imaging study of the brain (MRA looking for aneurysms or AVM's).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
