What Is The Cause And Treatment For Nose Congestion?

I often experience nose congestion but is generally relieved after use of antibiotics as advised by the doctor. This time, I suffered from pneumonia in December 2010. I remained fine for about 1-2 months after the treatment. I had acute sinositis in early March this year. I took about one month to recover. The treatment initially included antibiotic Omeprazole with histamine but had no effect. later doctor changed the medicine to Claritek antibiotic as my tonsils were becoming septic. I was fine after this treatment, however, minor cough continued.I again went to my doctor who diagnosed it as a result of some allergy. Now I am using lortec(one tab daily), Myteka(one tab daily) . I will also start using flexitide inhaler by tomorrow. I am not getting any relief. please suggest instant relief. I am a teacher and the cough embarrases during teaching. Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a Teacher having repeated upper and lower respiratory tract infections, took Claritek, sinusitis, pneumonia, treated with antibiotic, Omeprazole, antihistamine and so on. The overall history is indicating towards immunity weakness as you have recurrent respiratory problems.

Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations.
- CT scan of nose and sinuses as your presenting problem is nasal congestion.
- Further tests of blood, Vitamin D and A.
- Allergy tests.
- To watch for diabetes, hypertension and any other medical problems.
- X-ray of chest or CT can if required.
If any medical problems is found then to get this treated and many a times correction of the medical problems can give you permanent relief. If a specific cause is found for nasal blockage like polyp or hypertrophied turbinates then you will be treated as per the cause found.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
