What Is The Cause And Treatment For IBS?

Hi, I have pretty bad IBS that has aggravated recently. The transit of my food seems to take less time and I can hear my food gurgling into the upper colon while I'm still eating. After eating I am also in a lot of pain and can track the transit of my food because I can hear every piece making it's way through the colon (I even sometimes have a little gurgly feeling in my groin as it completes its journey :) I also have a problem with pain in my genitals that has been more or less constant for around a year. Recently, I've started to think that the two may be related. The pain can sometimes also be in the very bottom of the left buttock and can move between there and the left of my genitals. The reason I think they are related is that I have developed severe, sharp abdominal pains, which are a new development in my IBS. The pain starts in the left upper abdomen and almost shoots down in a straight line to the left lower abdomen and occasionally also into the buttock and groin, aggravating the pain I've had in that area for a while. Is there any condition that may cause this? Incidentally, I also seem to have an overactive bladder and urinate every 15-30 minutes. I'd probably say the longest I can last is an hour and a half. And even if I have urinated while at the toilet for a bowel movement, I always need to go again about five minutes after. Don't know if this is relevant :)

Hi,

The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is still not known. Symptoms can be quite variable and include abdominal pain, bloating, loose motion, diarrhea or constipation. Symptoms tend to come and go. There is no cure for IBS, but symptoms can often be eased with treatment. IBS is a common functional disorder of the gut.

A functional disorder means there is a problem with the function of a part of the body, but there is no abnormality in the structure. So, in IBS, the function of the gut is upset, but all parts of the gut look normal, even when looked at under a microscope.

However increased anxiety levels and over thinking are often related to irritable bowel syndrome. Your history is co incidental and all the events are not related to IBS. Most likely your IBS can be related to your high anxiety levels and overthinking, which stimulates the autonomous nervous system and increases symptoms.

Anti-anxiety medicine and probiotics should be taken by you. Apart from that life style modification will be helpful in your case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ramesh Kumar
