What is the blood discharge from the ears?

I went to the doctor today because of a head cold and severe ear pain. The doctor said inside my ear looked swollen and almost bloody. After a shower this afternoon I experienced a slow discharge of blood from the ear as well as an intermittent popping sound. IS this cause for alarm or simply due to the infection?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Blood discharge from ear after cold and ear pain is a cause of alarm for the following reasons:
- This indicates that the infection and inflammation has been transmitted from nose to the ear through eustachian tube
- Needs proper clinical evaluation, examination
- Oral and nasal decongestant
- Oral steroid as strong anti-inflammatory
- Antibiotic if there is any evidence of an infection
- Tympanotomy that is clearing the fluid after surgery to open up the ear drum in a classical manner
- Ear drops as would be suggested
- Complete the courses till cured well

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
