What Is The Amount Of Required Oxygen Level In An Elderly Patient?

My husband is 97 and is dying. We have put him on an oxygen level that is set at 3.5. How high can we put it? We are not going to a doctor and I just need to know how how we can safely put the oxygen level. To be clear, it is his decision not to go to the doctor, but we do want to make him as comfortable as we can and would like some help along these lines. Thank you so much. His breathing is pretty hard.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If he is suffering from pneumonia or COPD or respiratory failure means even after maintaining 9l/minute difficult to maintain saturation of blood. We have to treat the cause first otherwise it is difficult to make improvement in breathing. Please consult your physician immediately he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
