Psychiatrist Dr. Keerthish Shetty's  Response
It is not an easy concept for a non medico to understand. Amnesia due to brain damage will be associated with other features of head injury. Also, the pattern of amnesia will be consistent with what is expected. In case of psychogenic amnesia, a stressor is usually present and amnesia does not follow any set pattern.
For example: In case of psychogenic amnesia, he/she may deny knowing his/her name, but still be able to remember a lot of other more complex things. Another example is circumscribed amnesia where patient does not remember only particular events (usually stressful ones), but they can recall everything else.
