What Is Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Associated With?

hi, my newborn went into hopital when he was 12 days old, they still cant tell me exactly what the problem is, just that he has a low sodium and high pottasium level and his body does not produce enough cortisol, they think it could be congenital adrenal hyperplasia, what else could it possibly be?

Pediatrician, Surgery 's  Response
Hi I went through your question and i can understand your concern. 12 days old child with low sodium and if child is having vomiting , i suspect possibility of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). These children will also have hyperpigmentation on Genitalias and arm pit. Child needs to be stabilised with sodium correction and iv fluids. Further investigations like - Karyotyping, 17 Hydroxy progesteron , ultrasound pelvis to look for internal reproductive structures confirms the diagnosis. CAH is the most possible reason in this situation. Other cause could be Renal Problem if creatinine is also raised, but very unlikely.

I hope i have answered your quesiton.

Wish your child Fast recovery and Good health .
