What Is Mucomyst Prescribed For?

My husband has to take Mucomist because he is having a cat scan next week and his kidney numbers were high. Upon checking Mucomist it seems it is for the lungs? I am confused as to why he has to take this med if his kidney numbers are a little high, before and the day of the cat scan. Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mucomix is having N acetyl cysteine (NAC). NAC is anti-oxidant. Normally it is given for pulmonary diseases. But it is also given to protect kidneys from Intravenous contrast used for CT scan.

Contrast media used for better visualization in CT scan can actually damage kidneys. Since his kidney function test is altered, he is at risk of further kidney damage by contrast media. So to prevent this kidney damage, NAC is given.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health!
Regards,
Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar
