What Is Diazepam Prescribed For?

Why would a doctor prescribe diazepam to my husband who went to the ER showing obvious signs of detoxing from alcohol (he told them he was) and dehydration? I was out of town when this happened and my poor husband had no idea what he was doing and had the prescription filled and took the pills......as needed for agitation. Seriously? No wonder he started drinking again. Sorry I think I m venting.
