What Exactly Does A Weak Optic Nerve Imply And Can It Be Caused By Something Other Than Glaucoma ?

hi i went for a routine eye exam and was told that although my eye pressure is very good (12) that my optic nerve appears weak. She also said that this may stem from glaucoma or i could have simply been born like this and therefore it wouldn t pose it a real problem. Nevertheless, I had a vision field test done almost immediately and was told that my eyesight appears to be normal. My grandfather has gone blind from glaucoma but one else in my family suffers from that affliction. My question is what exactly does a weak optic nerve imply and can it be caused by something other than glaucoma?

you have a family history of glaucoma..what is your age? do u have associated comorbidities like hypertension / diabetes? from what u have said i can presume that your ophthalmologist saw suspicious cup disc ratio in your eye. . it can be normal also. . on the contrary sometimes glaucoma can be there inspite of normal pressures. . all you need now is periodic evaluation - monitoring your eye pressures, fields, RNFL thickness etc. . there are many problems that may weaken the optic nerve. . from your question i think your ophthalmologist should have thought of glaucoma only . .

Hi
Thanks for using health care magic,

Weak optic nerve in long term can affect your vision.

Nerve cells are the only cells which cannot regrow.

Avoid too much straining of eyes like tv, computer, this can reduce the impact

Some kinds of glaucoma run in the family. Your Ophthalmologist would have seen some changes which made him think it's because of Glaucoma but sometimes they can be present from birth and have to relation to glaucoma. Nothing to worry. If you ever have headache, blurring of vision and nausea, it would be wise to see the Ophthalmologist immediately.
