What Dosage Of Penicillin To Take And For How Long To Cure A Peptic Ulcer?

After a month of self testing, I m lead to believe I have a peptic ulcer . I can t afford to visit a doctor, and the free clinics around me are a long process to gain admittance to. I have some penicillin left over from a tooth issue that cost me a lot of money and it s not due to expire until late 2013, what dosage should I take and for how long to cure this ulcer?

Hi,
You cannot self diagnose a peptic ulcer. You may have all the symptoms, but the only way to know if you have it is by performing an upper endoscopy to directly look at the stomach. If you indeed had an ulcer, then penicillin is not at all the treatment. Penicillin is an antibiotic, and rarely used these days due to resistance. The only reason to use antibiotics for the stomach is if you have a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, which again you cannot self diagnose. This bacteria is treated with a course of 3 antibiotics for 10-14 days (not one antibiotic, and certainly not penicillin).
I advise you to visit a doctor for better evaluation.

hello
thanks for choosing healthcaremagic

Peptic ulcer disease is anendoscopic diagnosis . the most common causes are H. pylori infection and second is NSAID s ( anti inflammatory drugs) induced .

Since you are not able to approach a doctor at all i suggest the following , but still advice the best thing to do is visit a doc

Tab . H pylori kit twice daily for a period of 10 day
followed by
Tab . pantoprazole 40 md once daily half hour before breakfast

Penicillin is not the preffered medication, it can even aggravate your gastritis

in case there is no relief with this then you need to absolutely consult your gastroenterologist

Hi,

Thanks for posting your querry.
I would like you to understand that penicillin does not work in peptic ulcers.
Ideally i would want you to visit a doctor for the same but meanwhile you can take antacids as that will reduce your problems, if what we are dealing with is peptic ulcer.
Along with the antacid you can also have cold milk and avoid oily and spicy foods.

If your problem does not resolve soon then you must visit a doctor so that it does not increase further.

Regards
