What Dosage Of Azithromycin Should Be Given To A Child For Pneumonia?

Hi My 5 year old son was diagnosed with pnemonia tonight. They saw a spot on his right lung. it was at an urgent care center. They prescribed azithromycin 5.3ML daily for 5 days. Hes 46 pounds. It seemed to be a small dose since he take 7.5ML of pain reliever. Is that a common dose of antibiotics?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Healthcare Magic. I read your query and I understand your concern.

Actually the dosage of pain reliever and antibiotics have nothing to do with each other. The dose that your local physician prescribed is correct. Let me explain azithromycin administration briefly.
Normally the pharmaceutical form of Azithromycin is powder for oral suspension 200mg/5ml Powder for Oral Suspension. It dosage is calculated 10 mg/kg PO (Per Os, which means orally) every 24hours for 5 days. By calculations each 5 ml prepared suspension contain 200 mg azithromycin. Since your child 46 pounds, approximately the dosage prescribed has to be 5 to 5.3 ML.

Hope I helped with my answer. For further concerns or follow up questions, feel free to ask again.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Ina
