What Does Yellow Discharge From The Rectum Indicate?

I have had a colostomy since Oct 2016. I was told there would possibly be some discharge in the rectal area in the beginning but that was all. I only experienced a very small amount of clear, mucus. Now for the past week and a half I ve been feeling eager to go to the bathroom via rectal area and have been discharging a lot of a yellowish, thick mucus. Is this normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mucus discharge and altered bowel movements is quite common after colonoscopy. You can take laxatives like Lactulose and take fiber rich diet. If the problem persists for more than one week you have to consult your gastroenterologist and get evaluated. It can be due to sloughed off polyps or diverticulitis.

Wishing you good health.
