What Does This Urine Test Report Indicate?

I got a reading of rare atypical urothelial cells in a urine sample. What does rare imply? Is it qualitative or is it quantitative? How often does AUC mean cancer versus an infection somewhere? Does it sound right to you that the urologist says to come back in three months for another sample? (I am 76 YO, six feet, 200 lbs, have T2D controlled, controlled BP, and otherwise in good health.)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Presence of atypical cells in urine sample could indicate cancer of urinary bladder. However, it could also appear with inflammation of urinary bladder namely cystitis.
Hence, your Urologist has advised you to take up the test again after 3 months. In case you had cystitis, inflammation should have subsided and such atypical cells should not be seen.
In case it is seen again, you need to be investigated further to confirm the condition, so that it can be treated accordingly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
